Come hear about resources to strengthen your business.
The DMV has long been home to a thriving African food ecosystem — from the pioneering Ethiopian restaurants that turned Adams Morgan into “Little Ethiopia,” to the West African cafés and markets that flourished in Silver Spring, Hyattsville, and Alexandria. For decades, African groceries and restaurants have not only fed our communities but also served as cultural anchors, gathering places, and bridges to the broader public. Yet while these businesses have shaped the region’s identity, many still operate in isolation, without access to the resources, advocacy, and visibility that other food sectors enjoy.
The African Food Network is needed to change that. By uniting grocery owners, restaurateurs, chefs, and food entrepreneurs, the network will honor this rich legacy while creating space for the next generation to thrive. It will amplify African foodways, advocate for policies and partnerships that sustain small businesses, attract investment and training opportunities, and build a community where knowledge and resources are shared. In doing so, the Network ensures that this diverse lineage is not just history, but a living, evolving force shaping the future of food in the DMV.
